Former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James the ex-FBI chief has entered an innocent plea to providing misleading information to lawmakers and hindering a lawmaking procedure.
His attorney filed the answer acting as his counsel in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on Wednesday.
The defense lawyer stated he would try to have the legal matter dismissed for multiple causes including that his client, a opponent of President Donald Trump, was being singled out.
The former director was charged shortly after Trump pushed his chief prosecutor to move forward against him.
In court on mid-week, the defense counsel Patrick Fitzgerald advised the magistrate they planned to submit several legal requests to throw out the legal matter before a legal hearing, claiming the legal action was spiteful and that a US attorney was improperly appointed to handle the case.
The former director's legal matter was originally overseen by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his investigation into a different opponent - the New York official - was unable to bring criminal charges.
James Comey appeared in good spirits as he walked into the court on Wednesday, speaking with his attorneys and being lighthearted. He was joined by his spouse, Patrice Failor and child his daughter, a US lawyer who the former government terminated.
Upon hearing to the magistrate recite his legal protections and the pair of allegations against him in the courtroom on Wednesday, the defendant was inquired if he understood the allegations.
"Absolutely your honour. Thank you very much," he informed the proceedings.
The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was fired about several months into Trump's first term as national leader. At the moment, the director was overseeing an examination into international campaign influence and whether there were any connections between Russia and the election effort.
While in office, James Comey caused a backlash from the Democratic party when he stated just immediately preceding the 2016 presidential election that he was probing political contender Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server. Charges against Hillary Clinton were never brought, resulting in negative feedback from Republicans as well.
Prosecutors claim the former director provided false information to US lawmakers during a congressional hearing in 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the Russia election probe. They say he provided false information to the legislative body by claiming he had not approved an individual at the agency to disclose to news outlets details about the FBI investigations.
Government lawyers also charge the defendant of "wrongfully trying to influence, obstruct and delay" the committee by providing untrue information to it.
Through a recording Mr Comey shared to his online platform after he was charged, he stated he was not guilty and alleged Donald Trump of acting like a "autocrat".
"My family and I have understood for a long time that there are consequences to challenging Donald Trump," he said. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he continued. "Therefore proceed with a trial."
These allegations against the former director emerged after Trump shared on digital channels demanding his chief prosecutor, Pam Bondi, prosecute Mr Comey and other people.
